They were the team which gatecrashed the World Cup.
They impressed crowds and they charmed them with their charm – dancing their way on to the BBC’s television coverage.
Zimbabwe’s Stone went – but at one stage it was not certain they would be able to compete in Liverpool. They lacked the financial capital they wanted to create the trip and trained without facilities or equipment.
But contend that they failed – ending eighth, winning an unprecedented few matches.
Having established themselves hold for netball from Zimbabwe?
A number of the players of Zimbabwe had not even played on a suitable netball court, before the World Cup began.
Goal shot Joice Takaidza, that currently lives in Australia, claims that the facilities within her homeland are”the worst to train on”.
“At school we play sand and when you finish enjoying the dust will soon be on your throat,” she tells BBC World Service’s Sportshour programme.
“In the Premier League we play on concrete reasons, which are very hard and very dangerous too because they hurt your knees.”
Funding is the most important problem – as is true in several sports.
As government minister Kirsty Coventry, an Olympic swimming gold medallist at 2004 and 2008, clarifies:”two weeks before the championship, the Zimbabwe Netball Association hadn’t raised the money that they had needed to.
“We supplied a lot of support to allow them to be there.”
Financing appeals raised just #250 – a fall in the sea for the likes of Australia and England – however, it left a difference .
Nevertheless the issues didn’t end there.
Head trainer Lloyd Makunde needed to head into Liverpool and spend 30 of his money on crucial equipment such as balls and cones After the team arrived in the united kingdom.
“We faced several challenges,” states Makunde.
“We watched teams such as Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica when they had been heating up, and we really didn’t have the gear when we were doing the practice.”
Victories over recognized netball nations like Northern Barbados, Ireland and Sri Lanka at the World Cup revealed the possibility for victory.
But where will come from?
England goalkeeper Geva Mentor is.
Mentor has assembled equipment and kit to send to less based nations since viewing the disparity between teams at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney.
“The gift is there,” she says. “It’s just attempting to tap into this and make sure they know what they’ve got and they have got the help around them for each of these girls to be able to flourish.
“Some of the hardest bits is really finding folks on the ground to disperse the kit and get it out to the rural communities where individuals really need it”
Coventry – the ministry for youth, game recreation and arts – admits the Zimbabwean government must place”different constructions” set up in game, but states there are bigger priorities within the country.
“We are going through a difficult time and you will find things inside the nation, within the market, like medications for people, like education for individuals… and game is not up in this area as of right now.
“So for me to sit here and we would like to build netball courts and football fields and swimming… it is completely unrealistic and I’d be letting down thousands and hundreds down.”
Coventry wants to collaborate with partnerships and sport institutions to induce an improvement in facilities.
“I believe the athletes are demonstrating that we’ve got tremendous ability and that’s not going off,” she says.
“So it’s up to us to put into place the different structures that will allow for sports to be professional.”
