‘We’re not stuck in our ways,’ says PGA Tour commissioner on slow play

(CNN) — Winning a golf tournament has never been more lucrative.
The Experts’ winning handbag increased to $11 million. Both the Players Championship and the US Open’s winning handbag rocketed to $12.5 million last year. The winner of the FedEx Cup gets an eye-watering $15 million.
Nevertheless in the slow play of several leading players the sport has undergone something of a crisis of confidence in recent weeks.
American Bryson DeChambeau has been criticized by his fellow professionals in the Northern Trust event in New Jersey earlier this month.
Afterwards, new protocols which could observe players punished with punishment strokes to get slow play in the future were announced by the European Tour.
“From the stand point, there were over 1.2 million shots that were struck this year,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan told CNN Sport’s Patrick Snell, speaking about possible modifications to the match.
“And you’ve got some instances where players are taking an excessive amount of time. Like everything else in our company, this is something we are constantly monitoring.”

He continued:”We aren’t stuck in our own ways. We are aware that gamers are seeing the top players on the planet around the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour, plus they mimic their actions.
“And therefore, if there is an opportunity for us to make a positive contribution to the match and continue to increase our product, that’s what we’re going to perform.”
A changing world
With the rising influence of networking and the entire world moving in a quicker place, attention spans will also be arguably becoming shorter.
Fans want shorter intervals between more and play action packed with their screening experience.
“If you look at pace of play and you also have a look at how the world is shifting and also the need that everything happen faster than it did in earlier times it’s something we’ve been looking at,” Monahan added.
“We’ve been considering it since February 2019. We’re talking to our players as well as our players council and we are going to use this as an opportunity. It is not about any individual player.
“It is about our company placing a system in place that enables us to enhance and finally helps excite those people that will see and mimic the excellent players on earth, their pre-shot patterns, the way they approach the sport.
“But not everything will be ideal and you’ve got to recognize the areas you can improve and that’s what we’re doing.”

‘Inspiring and outstanding’
Despite the issue of slow drama, there were some story lines throughout this year that have experienced audiences gripped.
From Tiger Woods’ remarkable comeback to win the Masters, to Brooks Koepka switching into the sport’s newest celebrity , and Shane Lowry’s fairy tale Open triumph at Royal Portrush, it has made for viewing.
As a game is in a good place, and Monahan states golf.
“How we look at this new program is we are in a season of championships, starting in March with the Players all of the way throughout the Open Championship at July which leads us into the FedEx Cup Playoffs,” Monahan said.
“So, when you look at the champions we have had from that year, from Rory McIlroy into Tiger Woods to Brooks Koepka into Gary Woodland to Shane Lowry, and you consider the caliber of these championships, the championships themselves were both inspirational and extraordinary.

“And they’ve all grown. Those championships continue to thrive. And what you’re seeing as we get into the season of championships as well as also the FedEx Cup Playoffs is eyeballs and more energy on our sport as we continue to attempt to play with our roll to raise our game up and move forwards.
“What annually. Consider every of these events I just said and these champions and what they didn’t get there and the excitement about it. You’ve got to be feeling great about where we’re heading.”
