Villa Park was eliminated as a venue for its 2022 Commonwealth Games.
With the football season starting to accomodate the 2022 Qatar World Cup in November, Birmingham 2022 have announced the Ricoh Arena will substitute Villa Park as host venue for the rugby sevens tournament.
Since the dispute with arena owners of Coventry City Wasps rugby club, which has witnessed that the Sky Blues groundshare the Ricoh Arena has become available.
In a statement, chief executive of Birmingham 2022, Ian Reid said:”We are disappointed Villa Park will unfortunately no longer be part of our portfolio.
“However, we hope to continue working closely with Aston Villa in the run-up to the Games.”
It was affirmed on Tuesday that event organisers also have shifted the netball tournament into the NEC that was larger.
The conclusion reflects the growing popularity of the sport, together with England trying to retain the gold medal this past year they claimed against Australia, whilst building the summer on their third-placed World Cup finish that attracted huge crowds season.
“We’ve been thinking about how best to optimise the mix of places available to people,” Reid added.
“Ensuring we are developing a wonderful experience and showcase to the game, the athletes, the viewers and the host town and area.
“We are delighted to have the ability to relocate netball to a larger place as this game’s profile has massively improved since the 2017 bidding”
The Commonwealth Games will be held at venues throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands in July 27 until August 2, 2022.
