Divock Origi will have a scan on an ankle injury sustained in the 3-1 win over Newcastle of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has said.
Origi was injured in an early struggle by Newcastle midfielder Miguel Almiron and limped before half-time, prior to his replacement Roberto Firmino played a part.
Klopp stated:”Unfortunately Divock twisted his arm in the game, and needed to come off. We all hope he could’ve played , which is a indication that it is not that serious, or it’s not severe. He’s having a scan, he is in very great shape though and they’ll find it’s fine.
” It was my own decision to launch him on the left and Sadio at the middle, we’ve seen it work before, but it did not work now against such a profound defending side. That’s the reason why we changed it in the game too.”
Along with that harm, Klopp had frustration with Liverpool start to the game, allowing Jetro Willems to fire Newcastle right in to an early lead, leaving Liverpool with just one sheet by their opening five matches of the year.
“I started enjoying it once about 25 minutes once we finally came in the match,” he said. “We will need to work on this but it can happen, it was hard. Newcastle did everything they did, it’s difficult when they are good on the counter-attack.
“We needed another 15 minutes or so to set our rhythm, as you have to be much faster than we were at the very first area of the match. The moment we started doing this, we scored two wonderful goals and at the second half, after learning in the sport we scored once but played extremely well.”
When Joel Matip seemed to be hauled to the ground by Jamaal Lascelles, liverpool were denied a penalty however a VAR review agreed Andre Marriner’s decision not to award a spot kick.
The under-fire video inspection program has come in for criticism for the high bar which has been put to overturn’obvious and clear mistakes’, with referees chief Mike Riley admitting that week had overlooked four big events so far this year, and Klopp stated he would have expected a review to have the choice on this event.
“I think they did a review, the fourth told me that they did, and so was I surprised it wasn’t a punishment? Yes,” he said. “But that does not help clearly in situations such as this being amazed. It’s not a problem although it was a clear penalty for me – we would talk.
“it is a penalty; you cannot fight like this for a ball, it’s a wrestling position around Joel Matip. You do not require VAR, simply whistle and have a shot.”
