Karolina Pliskova was among the favourites to win the US Open title, but has been conquered by Britain’s Johanna Konta at a compelling last-16 match.
In her closing BBC Sport pillar from New York, the Czech third seed speaks about her departure at Flushing Meadows, why it has not changed her perception she is able to win a Grand Slam – and that her love for fishing.
Reduced to Johanna Konta was disappointing but I would not say this was another golden chance missed to finally win my first Grand Slam.
With an opponent who has been fourth in the world, therefore it was always going to be hard and I played with, and she performed the best .
And even though I’d won, I’d have played Serena Williams, and also possibly Elina Svitolina from the semi-finals, therefore there would not be an easy match between now and the final.
That was not a dream draw for me, although the first couple of matches were somewhat more easy than they they can be. The standard is really high in the women’s game but I am still confident I have the sport – that remains the goal.
In general, I played strong in the tournament – it wasn’t a disaster and it was just nothing . I could do better.
Resulting by a set and a break meant it was, of course, a opportunity that was huge but it is not like I overlooked match things – it was all of the way through the game.
Immediately after losing a match like that, I do not feel angry. You own a lot of emotion and pressure during a tournament so once you lose it is similar to all those emotions are lifted.
It is hard to talk about positives because I really don’t find any.
It was my very best game of the championship but sometimes it isn’t sufficient when somebody plays and Johanna did. I had defeated Johanna in a few at tour degree, but she played with more aggressive than our other matches.
She said until she believed she’d improved since I beat her in Rome in the Italian Open final – and now I think she was 50 times better!
What impressed me was the way she went for her shots a little bit longer, because normally I think she waits more for errors by her opponent, or plays crosscourt, however she moved for each shot and lots of times she hit on the line. She was brave and it paid off.
She served very nicely, especially in the third place when she was supporting on serve and I was always 1 game up. She did a fantastic job by functioning under stress and putting the pressure back on to me.
Overall I’d say it had been her best game of the championship so far, but it’s tough to say how far she can go.
She’s reached this part of a Grand Slam a few times now, also semi-finals, but I’m not sure if she could go on to acquire it since Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka are still in the attraction, while Elina is going to be demanding from the next round.
I will not watch the rest of the championship because of the time difference – I am flying back to Prague right away – and there is no one who I would be interested in staying up to see.
I’ll take time off because the month has been long, While I get to Prague and I have not had many days off. I will think about my plan, and the Asia swing this month, that starts.
My sister Kristyna is currently back in the Czech Republic because we’re away a great deal therefore we’ll spend some time, and I shall return home to Monte Carlo to get a few days too.
I’ll also have to see our little sister – she starts school this week and is six. She is very excited about that. She’s quite smart, I think more than many six-year-olds, therefore she enjoy it and should do well at college.
Clearly I wish I was going to be here in New York all week, but it will be great to see her going for her first week to school there.
Other than that, I’ll sleep, purchasing and performing all the regular stuff – although I doubt I’ll have time to fishing, that is among my hobbies!
I like fresh water fishing a lot. The Czech Republic has no coast so I fish in rivers, lakes, ponds or lakes.
So I have one of these, you need a licence to fish although I moved deep fishing in Miami and the Seychelles to try unique things and I understand more about the oceans there.
My dad is a huge fan of fishing – that’s where I receive my love by – and he attempts to educate me how to fish once we go. However, I don’t catch any fish that is large!
If you would like to catch fish it is simpler as you might grab one every 20 or 30 minutes, but should you would like to go for weights you need to be sitting for hours and hours maybe all evening.
It’s a relaxing pastime. I really don’t have my phone on when I am fishing since you want to be silent and concentrated, therefore it can be useful for the part that is mental.
I need to go fishing longer, After my tennis career is over, but for now I have one or two days off every now and then so I do not get the chance.
