Clinch their survival in Super League and huddersfield came in 22-10 down to obtain a 24-22 win over Catalans Dragons in the previous game of their season.
The Giants could have stayed up regardless of the result due to London Broncos’ 19-10 defeat Wakefield – however they were not to know that and to get an anxious hour, they looked poised for defeat.
But winger Louis Senior scored a 10 minutes from the end to place the stage to England winger Jermaine McGillvary on the flank to grab a first home win since May and completed a hat-trick of attempts to begin the fightback.
It meant that the Catalans finished the period with a fifth straight defeat, a gloomy method for veteran Australian forward Greg Bird to finish his career.
Without 11 senior players through injury, the Dragons built a winning guide from Arthur Mourgue and played with plenty of excitement and power.
The inspirational Sam Tomkins, whose ruined the Giants earlier in the summer, kicked five goals from as many attempts to keep his side in pole position for the majority of the game.
One of four teams at risk of the drop on the last day of the season, the Giants were made to endure without needing any favours and they left the start.
After Frawley’s high kick dropped they led 10-6 midway through the first half thanks to two tries from Senior, the first following a 60-metre move that was super triggered by the moment a present and a break by scrum-half Matt Frawley.
Tomkins was at the core of the Dragons’ attack along with his cut-out pass created the chance because of his Wigan team-mate Tierney to score their first attempt.
Half-back Mourgue, among 13 Frenchmen in the Dragons’ matchday group forced the running for Tierney’s second on 27 minutes that allowed the visitors to draw level.
Tomkins nudged his side in front with his second touchline conversion and, even after watching them force a collection of goal-line drop-outs, he increased the lead to 14-10 with a penalty four minutes ahead of half-time.
The Catalans maintained the momentum and, Mourgue jinked his way over for a solo try, following Benjamin Jullien had been held up over the line.
Tomkins kicked off his third conversion and that there seemed no way back for the Giants when he added a second penalty to grow the lead to 22-10 on 51 minutes.
However, stand-off Lee Gaskell worked over Senior for his attempt four minutes later after scooping a stray Catalans pass 20 metres from his own line and the winger included a 10 minutes.
Gaskell took over the duties and also added the conversion to reduce the gap to two points along with McGillvary revived his side’s lead with a try in the corner seven minutes from the conclusion.
